One photo shoot, one rack of East Indian clothing, and a split-second decision turned into Strawberry Alarm Clock’s most recognizable symbol: the kurta. We sit down with George, Gene, Mark, and Howie to unpack the real story behind the “Incense And Peppermints” era, how a signature look gets cemented on album covers and TV, and why putting those outfits back on decades later felt like flipping a switch and becoming the band again.
From there, we get brutally honest about the music business side of psychedelic rock: early band lineups, the instrumental roots of “Incense And Peppermints,” and how songwriting credits and publishing deals can leave artists watching a million-selling record go by without seeing the money. We talk about the long road of trying to fix old contracts, the irony of where the catalog ended up, and what today’s musicians should learn before they sign anything.
Then we bring the story into the present with the new album “Where’s One.” We dig into how they record live in the studio, why they still lean on an analog board even while tracking into Pro Tools, and how Steve Bartek’s orchestration pulled in a world-class string quartet for a performance that left everyone in the control room emotional. If you care about 1960s rock history, recording techniques, and what it takes to keep a band alive across generations, this conversation delivers.
